I’m casting my next hero as a…DENTIST

Well, I stand corrected. I was completely wrong in my earlier post, shame, shame.

I just met a dentist worthy of his own leading role in a Romance.  He is my hero.

Seriously handsome, witty, charming…and totally put me at ease when I blabbered about how afraid I was of the dentist.  Sigh.

Oh, and no root canal needed. 🙂 ‘nough said.

When it comes to the dentist…

I am a complete and total coward.

I am more afraid of the dentist than of child-birth.  Seriously.  And I  had two giant babies (9 and 10lbs) and yet, I’m more afraid of seeing the dentist this morning than I was entering labour & delivery at the hospital.  My sinus saga may not be my sinus’s at all…I’m kinda starting to think it may be a tooth.  So, after talking to a good friend of mine who just had a ‘painless’ root-canal done, I got the name of the surgeon and made an appointment.  I’m going in this morning at 10:30 for x-rays and a consultation.  I’ve broken out into a cold sweat just writing about this.

And then that got me to thinking, why DO people hate going to the dentist so much?  I mean, I’m not the only one.  I haven’t met one person who has said, “Oh I love going to the dentist” even if they like their dentist.  So, I think I’ve got a few reasons why it is people cringe at the thought of going to the dentist (and just for the record, I know there are some lovely dentists and hygienists-I even have a friend who is a dental hygienist).

So, when I leave a doctor’s appointment (regular family doctor) I don’t leave feeling like a bad person. Yet when you go to the dentist, they make you feel like you are a bad person, the ONLY person in the world who doesn’t spend half an hour on their mouth a day, “You really need to floss more.”  “Why are you brushing too hard?”  Why? Why? Why?  And then you have to shrug your shoulders and be all meek and then promise to do better next time.

I’m sorry the way I see it, no one has ever died from too much plaque.  Really,  let’s put it into perspective, the world isn’t going to end if you’ve got tartar build-up.  There are ‘real’ health problems, and there are ‘dental issues’.  Two completely different things.

And the whole mouthwash thing, “yes use mouthwash to avoid tartar build-up.”  Have you ever looked at the ingredients on that?  Basically you are swooshing poison around your mouth so you can avoid plaque.  And yet I still do it.  I eat all organic food, and yet I’m swooshing around toxic chemicals in my mouth in an attempt to please my dentist.

Now even the ads for dental products are focused around ‘getting better dental check-ups’.  Because we all live in fear of the all-mighty dentist.  Let’s all try and please the dentist at all costs.  On the Crest website, one of their criteria when trying to help you decide what electric toothbrush you want is “better dental check-ups”.  Oooh, yes, because we are all cowering in the corner, fearful of what the dentist will tell us.

AND, I would think, with the astronomical fee you pay at the dentist, at least, you could leave feeling good, you know like after a hair appointment.  Instead you hold that free (I use that term lightly, because you just paid a bazillion dollars if you don’t have insurance) toothbrush and floss, vowing to yourself to “Oh, man I’ve got to floss more, I’ve got to do better for my next appointment.  I’ve really got to get my act together.”

Now, excuse me while I go brush my teeth with my electric toothbrush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash before my dental appointment.

I don’t think I will ever be able to cast a hero/heroine as a dentist.  Or a hygienist.

All right. That was a rant of a post and seriously, I’m sure there are very nice dentists out there.

Here’s hoping I’m about to meet one of them.

And then, it’s off to the family doctor for DD to get her 15-month vaccinations.

Fun days 🙂

At least I’ll have an answer as to what’s up with my cheekbone.  I’ll tell you one thing, if it does turn out to be just a sinus infection, I will be the happiest person ever to have a sinus infection.

All right, enough complaining.

As soon as it’s nap-time for DD, I’m finishing up this MS, because I’m behind!!!! I need to wrap it up and hit SEND.
